The 32-man field battled it out in a Championship bracket starting on Thursday, June 11, while there was also a Women’s Championship bracket, a Senior bracket, and two consolation brackets.
“It was great, especially because I spent the first half of the summer in Australia practicing,” Hogan said. “I came back to play in these tournaments. The team has been practicing hard and it looks like we are going to be ready for the fall. Seeing someone who redshirted last year in the championship with me is a positive for the our team and it was good to play with my teammates.”
Hogan was the No. 3 seed of the tournament and reached the finals after he ran through his first four matches. Hogan defeated fellow Aggie Kenneth Fadke in the semifinals before beating the 2012 SCAGA Match Play Champion, Patrick Beyhan, also a student-athlete at NM State who redshirted during the 2012-13 season. Hogan, a native of Canberra, Australia, beat Beyhan 2-1 to claim his first SCAGA title.
Although Hogan fell behind early to the defending champ, he stayed within striking distance and managed to even up the match at the turn. He then steadily climbed ahead of his teammate posting the win on the 17th green at Tanoan CC.
