LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State softball players Staci Rodriguez and Amber Olive were named to the All-Pacific Region first and second team, respectively, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on Thursday, May 16. Rodriguez was named to the first team as an outfielder, while Olive was selected for the second team as an outfielder. Both Aggies are first-time recipients of the all-region honor.

Rodriguez, a sophomore from Paramount, Calif., finished the season with a Western Athletic Conference leading 20 home runs and a .357 batting average. The Aggie slugger had a team-leading .780 slugging percentage and a perfect fielding percentage during her sophomore campaign. Her 20 home runs is No. 2 in the Aggies’ season record book. She was named WAC Player of the Year for her efforts during conference play and was honored as WAC Hitter of the Week three times. She led the conference with 63 RBI and 131 total bases with six successful steals. Rodriguez had 17 multi-hit and 15 multi-RBI games during 2013 with two grand slams and a record-setting three home runs and 12 total bases against Siena College (3/25).

Olive, a senior from Simi Valley, Calif., led the Aggies and was second in the conference with a .393 batting average and was tops in the WAC with 79 hits and 41 runs scored. She had 20 RBI on the season and 16 successful stolen bases. She finished her senior campaign with 24 multi-hit games and went on a 17-game hitting streak during the season. Olive had two sacrifice flies on the year for the Aggies and was named first-team All-WAC. She was named All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year by the NSCA, CoSIDA Academic All-District and was honored by the NM State psychology department as the top graduating student. The senior graduated with bachelor’s degrees in psychology and communication studies and was selected as the NM State Scholar Athlete for the spring commencement of 2013.

NM State finished the year with a 37-20 overall record and 16-5 in WAC play. The Aggies ended the season second during the regular season and second at the WAC Tournament in Ruston, La. Six Aggies were named All-WAC selections and senior pitcher Alex Newman was selected to the WAC all-tournament team. The season was highlighted by a record-setting 11-game win streak that was made by defeating No. 17 Arizona 3-2 in mid-April.

The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2013 NFCA Division I All-American teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration. The 2013 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced on Wednesday, May 29, via NFCA.org.
