SAN JOSE, Calif. – The New Mexico State softball team fell 2-1 and 5-2 in the final doubleheader of the regular season to the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday, May 4. The Aggies and the Spartans battled in two games for the Western Athletic Conference regular season title, and NM State dropped game one 2-1 in eight innings before SJSU claimed the 5-2 win in game two.
The Aggies (35-18, 16-4 WAC) head into the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed, while SJSU claims the regular season title and sits at the top of the bracket going into the Louisiana Tech hosted tournament in Ruston, La.
NM State had 14 hits on the day with a home run in game two by freshman standout Emma Adams, but only three runs scores for the Aggies on the day.
Tip my hat to San Jose State, it was a true battle in each of our games,” head coach Kathy Rodolph said. “We just have some back on Monday and regroup and get ready for the conference tournament.”
Senior Alex Newman took the two losses in the circle for NM State but managed to allow just eight hits and two walks in her eight innings pitched.
Game one took a slow start until the bottom of the fourth when SJSU plated the first run of the game off an RBI single that was hit back to the right corner of the field to plate the runner sitting at first.
NM State answered back in the top half of the fifth with a lead-off double by Kelsey Dodd. Chelsea Dohrwardt pinch ran for the first baseman and was brought around off the bat of senior Tehani Kaaiue, who doubled to the left side.
NM State sent SJSU away in order in the bottom half of that fifth inning and the Spartans got just one hit in the sixth before the game eventually went to extra innings with a 1-1 tie. Kaaihue finished the game 2-for-3 with a single up the left side in the top of the eighth, but two Amanda Pridmore strikeouts sent NM State back on defense.
SJSU put runners on first and second with a single and a walk before the left fielder hit an RBI single through the gap at first and second to score the game winning run in extra innings.
Neither team wasted time in the second game before rattling off some hits. The Aggies led off with singles by Amber Olive and Kristi Covarrubia in the top of the first. No Aggies were able to score in that inning, but the Spartans blasted a 3-0 lead with a three-run home run by the designated player after two singles put Spartans on base.
NM State answered back in the visitors half of the second with a single through left center by Teresa Conrad and a two-run rocket over the left field wall by Adams. The home run is No. 4 for the freshman this season.
NM State worked for four more hits in the game, but SJSU hit a RBI double in the bottom half of the second to take back the lead.
The pitcher’s duel was complete after freshman Makayla McAdams gave up her second run of the game in the fifth inning with a double and a triple to put the score at 5-2 for San Jose State.
McAdams pitched 4.1 innings for NM State with three strikeouts and just one walk.
NM State heads into the 2013 WAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and faces the winner of game three, which is the No. 3 versus the No. 6 seeds in the bracket. That game is set for Wednesday, May 8, with the Aggies facing the winner on Thursday, May 9 at 2 p.m.
