LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men’s tennis team heads to the 2013 edition of the Western Athletic Conference Championship in Denver, Colo., April 26-28. NM State enters the championship as the No. 4 seed and faced No. 5 Utah State on April 26 at 10 a.m.

The Aggies go into the tournament as the No. 4 seed after finishing the regular season with a record of 13-8 and 3-2 in conference play.  NM State completed the regular season defeating Utah State 4-2 and beating three of its last four opponents.

Consistency throughout the season led the Aggies to a No. 4 seed entering the tournament.  At no point in the season did the Aggies lose more than two consecutive matches.  NM State also earned five shutout victories this season, including dominating 7-0 wins over UT Permian Basin and Scottsdale Community College.

Some notable wins for the Aggies during the season were against 58th-ranked Texas A&M Corpus Christi and in-state foe Western New Mexico University.

NM State was led by freshmen standout, Daniel Fernandez.  During the season Fernandez finished 15-4 in singles overall and 4-0 in WAC play, winning each of his conference matches in straight sets.  Fernandez recorded a 12-3 record in doubles, playing primarily with Paul Denele at the No. 3 spot.  He was named WAC player of the week twice for his work on the court.

The Aggies enter the tournament on a two-match win streak and look for a repeat performance against No. 5 Utah State, Friday, April 26 at 10 a.m.  The winner of Friday’s match will face No. 1 seed Denver on Saturday morning.
