LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women’s tennis team travels to Denver, Colo., for the Western Athletic Conference Championship on April 25-27.  The Aggies qualified as the eighth seed in the tournament and plays top-seeded Denver on Thursday, April 25.

The Aggies’ regular season match was against Denver on April 14 when they were swept by the Pioneers.  Senior Ginet Pinero took her match to three sets (7-5, 6-7, 11-9) before losing the point on senior day.

Fellow senior Jodie Williams earned a victory in doubles with Denise Van Der Ben with an 8-5 score, but the other Aggie doubles teams fell giving Denver a 1-0 lead going into singles competition.  Junior Ros-Polly Nguyen was able to keep her first set close before losing in two sets (6-4, 6-1) in the No. 5 spot.

NM State also faced Utah State during the weekend series on April 12 and defeated the northern Aggies 5-2.  The crimson Aggies started slow and lost two of the three doubles matches.  Williams and Van Der Ben earned an 8-4 victory but the other Aggie pairs lost their matches giving Utah State a 1-0 lead going into singles competition.

The Aggies defeated Utah State in five of the six singles matches, securing a spot in the conference tournament and knocking out USU. Pinero won in two sets (6-1, 6-2) to earn the No. 1 point for the Aggies.  Van Der Ben, Annemieke Witte, Nguyen and Mia Brandt earned singles victories and secured the 5-2 victory over Utah State.

The Aggies have struggled in WAC play this season but hold victories over Seattle and Utah State, which helped to qualify for the WAC Tournament.  The Aggies still managed to win six dual matches this season and finish with a 6-15 overall record.

NM State and the Pioneers battle at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, and the winner of the NM State-Denver match will face the winner of No. 4 UT Arlington and No. 5 Idaho.
