CHANDLER, Ariz. (April 9) – The New Mexico State University women’s golf team shot a 21-over-par 309 during Tuesday’s second round of the Cowgirl Classic being played at the par 72, 6,299-yards Ocotillo Golf Resort.
The Aggies now sit in 14th place, up from 18th after round one, heading into the final 18 holes to be played on Wednesday. NM State has a total two-day score of 71-over 647 (338-309).
Freshman Kacey Dalpes carded an even-par 72 on Tuesday to place her in a tie for 10th heading into the final round. Dalpes has a two-round total of 9-over 153 (81-72).
Dalpes sank two birdies on the day to go along with just two bogeys. Her second bogey came on the final hole, causing Dalpes to miss her third round below par this season by one stroke.
Like Dalpes, all other NM State golfers also either improved or tied their first-round score.
Junior Amelie Buhl finished Tuesday with an 8-over-par 80 and will head into the final round in a tie for 51st place with a total score of 19-over 163 (83-80).
Aggie newcomer Viviana Macias continues to impress during her first semester as an Aggie. The freshman finished the second round with a 7-over 79 and is tied for 66th place with a total score of 22-over-par 166 (87-79).
Most impressive for Macias on Tuesday was her team-leading four birdies. She also leads NM State with five total birdies throughout the tournament.
Sophomore Paige Darwin, meanwhile, tied her best round of the season on Tuesday by shooting a 6-under-par 78, tying her score from round two of the BYU at Entrada Classic. Darwin sits in 85th place at 26-over 170 (92-78).
Rounding out the Aggie golfers is sophomore Laura Barron who tied her first round score of 15-over-par 87 on Tuesday and is in a tie for 99th at 30-over 174 (87-87), and senior Marisa Bautista, who is playing as an individual and also carded a 15-over 87 on Tuesday and is in 103rd at 37-over-par 181 (94-87).
Overall, Boise State continues to lead the Cowgirl Classic, both as a team and individually. The Broncos will head into the final round with a total-team score of 32-over-par 608 (307-301) and a commanding 11-stroke lead over Portland State who sits at 43-over 619 (322-297). Rounding out the top 3 is Xavier, which had the low round of the day, and is at 45-over-par 621 (325-296).
Bronco Hayley Young shot her second consecutive round of 1-under 71 and is the only golfer under par heading into Wednesday’s final round. Her total score of 2-under 142 (71-71) is six strokes better than her nearest competitor, Portland State’s Britney Yada. Yada’s teammate, Aram Choi, sits in third, eight strokes behind Young.
The Cowgirl Classic will conclude on Wednesday with the final 18 holes. Teams are set to tee off starting at 7:30 a.m. (MT).
