Release:  04/05/2013

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (April 5) – The New Mexico State University women’s golf team will participate in the Cowgirl Classic hosted by the University of Wyoming beginning Monday, April 8.  The tournament is the final non-conference event for the Aggies before they conclude the season at the WAC Championship Tournament later on this month.

The three-round tournament runs from April 8-10 and will be played in Chandler, Ariz., at the par 72, 6,299-yards Ocotillo Golf Resort.  Each day consists of one 18-hole round with each round beginning at 7:30 a.m. (MT).

The 19-team field is the largest for any tournament NM State has been a part of this season.  Joining the Aggies in Arizona will be: host Wyoming, I-10 rival UTEP, WAC-member Seattle, Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, Eastern Michigan, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Sacramento State, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, Utah Valley, Weber State and Xavier.

NM State will be represented by six members of its golf team.  Playing as part of the five-golfer team will be freshmen Kacey Dalpes and Viviana Macias, sophomores Laura Barron and Paige Darwin and junior Amelie Buhl.  Senior Marisa Bautista will also make the trip, participating as an individual golfer.

Buhl and Dalpes, who continues to lead the Aggies in most categories and is coming off her second eagle of the season during the BYU at Entrada Classic, will be competing in their ninth tournament of the season.  They are the only two Aggie golfers that have competed in every tournament this season.

Barron has only missed one tournament and will play in her eighth tourney of the season while Darwin will be participating in her third consecutive tournament and fifth overall.

Macias, who joined the team for the spring schedule, has played in every spring tournament and will be making her fourth appearance for NM State.  She is coming off her best finish (T45), round (75) and total score (+21 237) at the BYU at Entrada Classic.

Bautista, meanwhile, will be golfing in her third tournament of the season and first of the spring schedule.  This will also be her second time participating as an individual, as she also played as an individual during the Aggies’ home tournament, the Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Intercollegiate in October.

This will be the seventh edition of the Cowgirl Classic, a tournament that has been played since 2007.  NM State also participated in the tournament in 2011 and 2012.

In 2011, the Aggies came close to winning the tournament, finishing in second place out of 23 teams.  NM State was aided by former Aggie golfer Suteera (Pang) Chanachai, who finished in a tie for third and shot a 5-under-par 67 during the second round, a tournament record low for a round which still stands today.

Last year NM State finished 12th out of 24 teams and was led by former Aggie golfer Demi Mak who finished in a tie for ninth.  Of the Aggies participating this year, Buhl is the only golfer that also played in last year’s tournament, finishing in 84th place.

Iowa took last year’s Cowgirl Classic team title with a final score of 20-over 884 while Colorado State’s Brianna Espinoza won the individual crown finishing with a tournament record 8-under-par 208.
