LAS VEGAS - The New Mexico state softball team fell 4-3 to Cal State Northridge on Friday afternoon, March 1, in the second game of the Eller Media Stadium Classic at UNLV. The Aggies went 0-2 on the day and move to 10-7 on the season.
Senior Alex Newman put in 6.1 innings of work in the circle with five strikeouts, but allowed three of the Matadors' runs across the plate to earn the loss and move to 6-4 in the circle.
"We just had too many errors and too many missed opportunities today," head coach Kathy Rodolph said. "We need to just come out and work harder tomorrow."
CSUN took the initial lead of the game with a ground out to the Alex Newman in the circle that scored the first run.
NM State came back for a run of its own after Staci Rodriguez reached base on a fielding error and Teresa Conrad moved her into scoring position at third base with a single up the middle. Malena Padilla brought Rodriguez across the plate when she put the ball in play to the shortstop, but reached base on the fielding error.
NM State leaded the bases in its half of the fourth inning to bring Conrad back to the plate. She picked up her first hit of the day, 18th of the season, and with a single through the right side to plate two runs to give the Aggies a 3-1 lead after four complete innings.
In the top of the fifth, the Matadors reclaimed the lead with a three-run inning off a single and two errors, but each of the runs went down unearned in the inning.
The Aggies went into the bottom of the seventh, but were put away in order, giving the team its second loss of the tournament. NM State continues with the Eller Media Stadium Classic on Saturday, March 2, with games scheduled at 2:30 p.m. against Weber State and 7 p.m. against host UNLV.
