GREENVILLE, N.C. - The New Mexico State baseball team fell 5-1 to East Carolina in the finale of the of the Keith LeClair Classic, Sunday, Feb. 24 in Clark-LeClair Stadium. The Aggies fall to 3-4 on the year while ECU moves to 3-3.
Senior right-hand pitcher Michael Ormseth held the Pirates scoreless through five innings before the host team tallied four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ormseth falls to 0-1 after marking two strikeouts while giving up two earned runs.
NM State took a brief 1-0 lead in the top half of the sixth thanks to an RBI double by freshman Kent Blackstone. Left-fielder Michael Paulson and pinch-hitter Cody Edwards drew back-to-back two-out walks and Blackstone followed with a double to right field scoring Paulson for the game's first run.
The Aggies, who left a total of 13 runners on base, had an opportunity to score in the eighth inning as Lecount and Phillips walked to start the frame. After a fly-out by an Aggie pinch-hitter, Cody Edwards singled through the right side to load the bases. After a pitching change by the Pirates, NM State grounded out in two consecutive at-bats.
Seven different Aggies picked up a hit on the afternoon with NM State drawing eight walks, as the Aggie pitching staff didn't allow a single walk during the game.
The Aggies head to Raleigh, N.C. to face nationally ranked North Carolina State, Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 26-27 at 1:00 p.m. (MT) each day. The games will air on KSNM AM 570 as a tape delay and air live on the Internet at www.NMStateSports.con for a fee.
