LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Feb. 21) - The New Mexico State women's tennis team hits the road for three dual matches on the West Coast, beginning Friday, Feb. 22 through Sunday, Feb. 24. The Aggies (1-2) hit the courts against Cal State Fullerton, No. 59 UC Irvine and Cal State Northridge over the three-day road trip.
Coming off a week-long break from competition, the Aggies started the season 1-2 after claiming their first win of the spring season over Weber State on Feb. 9. The Aggies had a pair of losses on the season-opening weekend as well, with a 7-0 loss to UNLV and a 5-2 loss to Pacific.
The Aggies open the weekend against Cal State Fullerton on Friday afternoon. The Titans are on a three-match winning streak that includes a win over Cal State Northridge, the Aggies Sunday opponent. Cal State Fullerton is led by sophomore Kalika Slevcove, who holds a 6-1 dual record this season. The last time the teams met in 2011, the Titans held off the Aggies 4-3.
NM State then works its way to UC Irvine on Saturday, Feb. 23 to face the Anteaters. Ranked No. 50 in the country, the Anteaters open a nine-match homestand against the Aggies with a 7-3 record. Kristina Smith and Franziska Goettsching are the 40th-ranked doubles team in the nation, helping the team to that 7-3 overall record, as UCI is 4-0 when winning the doubles point.
NM State faces the Matadors of Cal State Northridge on Sunday, Feb. 24, to finish off the weekend. The Matadors are 2-1 on the season after claiming wins over UMKC and Cal State Stanislaus, but falling 4-3 to Cal State Fullerton.
The Aggies continue to look at senior leadership as the strength of the team as Ginet Pinero went 2-1 in singles play during the Aggies first week.
NM State kicks off the weekend on Friday against Cal State Fullerton at 2 p.m. at the Titan Tennis Center before meeting No. 59 UCI on Saturday at noon. The Aggies wrap the weekend in Northridge, Calif., at 11 a.m. against the Matadors.
