LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Feb. 15, 2013) - The New Mexico State women's golf team kicks off its spring season by participating in the Folino Invitational, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, beginning on Sunday, Feb. 17.
The three-round tournament will be played Feb. 17-19 at the par 71, 6,067-yards Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms located in Industry Hills, Calif., just east of Los Angeles. Each day will consist of one 18-hole round.
Joining NM State as part of the 12-team field will be host Cal State Fullerton, defending tournament champion Gonzaga, Boise State, Hawai'i, Sacramento State, Cal-Poly, Montana, Stetson, UC Riverside, Portland State and Wyoming.
The five-member team that head coach Jackie Booth has assembled to travel to California includes four familiar faces and one golfer making her Aggie debut.
Senior Aileen Meredith, junior Amelie Buhl, sophomore Laura Barron and freshman Kacey Dalpes will all be competing at the Folino Invitational. The foursome compromises the core of the Aggie squad as all four also participated in every tournament for NM State during the fall season.
The final piece of the team will be filled by freshman Viviana Macias. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native did not play for the Aggie golf team during the fall semester. She joined the team in January and will play her first round of golf for NM State on Sunday.
Booth hopes Macias follows the footsteps of her fellow freshman, Dalpes, and makes an immediate impact at NM State. Dalpes heads into the spring schedule leading the Aggies in scoring average (75.93), low three-round score (219), low round (70) and best finish (T-7).
This will be the first time NM State participates in the Folino Invitational. The tournament is in its third year of existence.
Last year's tournament was won in convincing fashion by Gonzaga who finished with a 45-over-par 897. The Bulldogs finished 13 strokes ahead of host Cal State Fullerton.
In 2011, the inaugural Folino Invitational was a two-round event. Long Beach State took home the trophy with a two-round total score of 30-over-par 606.
