LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The NM State men's tennis opened the 2013 spring season with a 5-2 win over Texas A&M Corpus-Christi, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the NM State Tennis Center.
"The final score does not reflect how close this match was. Starting with the doubles point battle all the way to the end," Head Coach Carlos Vargas said. "About half way through the singles matches I had no idea where our 4th point would come from, we were ahead at #2 and #4 but were down in all the rest of the matches and were not even close. That's what i'm most proud of today. The way that all of the team fought back and were able to turn the match around"
The Aggies took 2 of 3 in the doubles, as the team of Ramirez and Westgate defeated Nagy and Barta, 8-5, while Degardin and Blank handled Jordao and Westmoreland, 8-2. Fernandez and Manivannan lost their doubles match to Weindinger and Maingot, 8-4.
In singles action, the Aggies won four matches. Ramirez beat Westmoreland, 6-2, 6-2, while Degardin beat Barta, 6-1, 6-2. Pfister laso won in straight sets, beating Jordao, 7-5, 6-1.
Denele dropped the first set of his match, 6-0 but bounced back with a 6-4, 6-3, second and third sets. Fernandez and Westgate both lost but it took three hard fought sets.
The Aggies will be back on the court, Jan. 25 at Scottsdale Junior College.
