EL PASO, Texas – The New Mexico State men’s golf team carded a 15-under par, 273 in the final round of the Price’s Give Em Five Invite, at the Butterfield Trail Golf Club, Saturday morning. The Aggies finished sixth after starting the day tied for 10th.
“The team is very capable of those types of rounds,” head coach Mike Dirks said. “It’s nice to see this happen for our team since we have been struggling this fall. “
Justin Shin led the Aggies with a 5-under par, 67, tying him for second overall in the tournament at 4-under par, 212. This was Shin’s best finish of the fall season. He recorded six birdies and one bogey in his final round.
“Justin had a tough first round but battled back and in the second round, making some tough birdie putts,” Dirks said. “He stopped forcing things and just played relaxed.”
Brett Walker had the low round of the final round with a 6-under par, 66, a career-best. He finished tied for 27th overall with six birdies and an eagle two on the par 4 ninth. Derek Baade was 3-over par, 75 in the final round and 6-over par, 222 for the tournament, tying for 33rd overall. He had four birdies in the final round.
“The thing I was really happy for Brett about was that he made a few birdies to start the round and then double bogeyed,” Dirks said. “He didn’t let that bother him and just continued to fight thru and finish the round strong.”
Kenneth Fadke had his best round of the tournament on Saturday with a 5-under par, 67, recording seven birdies. Fadke was 9-over par, 225 for the tournament, tying for 43rd. Willy Hogan carded his best round of the tournament with a 1-over par, 73. He finished 65th overall at 15-over par, 231.
The Aggies had three individuals in the tournament as well. Taylor Mihok fired a 4-over par, 76 in the final round, placing tied for 27th at 5-over par, 221. Joey Martinez was even-par, 72 in the final round, tying him for 38th overall at 7-over par, 223. Zach Adams also carded his best round of the tournament with a 3-over par, 75.
