NORTHRIDGE, Calif.-The New Mexico State women’s basketball team opened the 2009-10 season with a 79-72 win at Cal State Northridge, Friday, Nov. 13, in Northridge, Calif.

Junior guard Danisha Corbett led the Aggies with a team-high 21 points on a 5-for-10 performance from the 3-point line. She was also strong at the free-throw line going 6-for-6 as the Aggies shot 75.7 percent from the line.

“It’s a good road win for us,” head coach Darin Spence said. “I thought for the first game we had quite a few tests and that’s a good thing.”

Junior guard Madison Spence supplied 15 points with four assists and four steals while sophomore guard Kaitlyn Soto added 11 points and three assists off the bench.

In her Aggie debut, junior guard Jasmine Lowe scored nine points along with three steals and three assists. Sophomore forward Kelsie Rozendaal also contributed off the bench with a game-high six offensive rebounds and six points in 20 minutes of action.

“Danisha and Madison had solid games,” Spence said. “Jasmine and Kaitlyn both came in off the bench and gave us some energy and played well defensively and offensively.”

After the Aggies posted a 38-25 halftime lead, NM State extended the advantage to 17 points, 58-41, on a lay-up from senior guard Crystal Boyd at the 9:23 mark.

With 6:34 remaining, Cal State Northridge cut the NM State lead to seven, 59-52, but the Aggies withstood the charge and made 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute.

The Aggies continue their two-game California road swing at Cal Poly, Sunday, Nov. 15, at 3 p.m.
