The New Mexico State men's golf sits in sixth place at the Turtle Bay College Invitational, after a first round team score of 3-over par, 291. The Aggies played the Arnold Palmer Course on day one, a par 72, 7,143 yard track.

"We had an average performance today," head coach Scott Lieberwirth said. "It was a solid effort from top to bottom but we need more fire power then we got. We have to do a better job of hitting greens in regulation, giving us a chance to make birdies."

The Aggies were led by senior Ryan Word, who carded a 1-under par, 71 and is tied for ninth overall. Freshman Derek Baade shot an even par, 72, placing him tied for 13th overall.

Sophomore Gaston De La Torre and freshman Justin Shin both fired rounds of 2-over par, 74. De La Torre and Shin are tied for 26th overall. Junior Tim Madigan rounded out the Aggie competitors with a 4-over par, 76. He is tied for 42nd overall.

San Diego State leads the tournament after a 10-under par in round one, followed by Long Beach State (-3), Hawai'i (E), Illinois (+2) and Santa Clara (+2). Johan Carlsson of San Diego State leads all individuals with a first round score of 5-under par.

The Aggies will be back in action Tuesday morning for round two as they move to the par 72, 6,662 yard George Fazio Course. Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. (HT)
