Aggies Struggle on Day One in Hawai'i

KAHUKU, Hawai'i - The New Mexico State women's golf team tied for 15th after one round of play in the 2009 Turtle Bay Resort Invitational in Kahuka, Hawai'i, Monday, Nov. 2.

The Aggies fired a 22-over-par 310 to finish ahead of Washington, Santa Clara and Oregon State in the 18-team field.  UC-Davis is in first place carding a 7-under-par 281 on the 6,261 yard, par-72 George Fazio Course.

"This is an exciting tournament to be playing in and the field is a challenging one," co-head coach Jackie Booth said.  "We just have to go out and play like we can."

Western Athletic Conference foe San Jose State sits in second place shooting an even par 288 in day one.  Alice Kim of UC-Davis sits on top of the leader board with a 5-under-par 67, while SJSU's Cristina Corpus and UC-Davis's Demi Runas are tied for second with a 4-under-par 68.

Senior Maggie Murphy (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was the top finisher in day one for NM State as she carded seven straight pars and came in tied for 43rd with a 4-over-par 76, while junior Mint Swaschuto (Bangkok, Thailand) was one stroke behind her to tie for 54th.

Junior Buz Bowerman-Ritchie (Oshawa, Ontario) carded a 6-over-par 78 to tie for 62nd and sophomore Gina Bortoletto (The Woodlands, Texas) tied for 73rd with a 7-over-par 79.  Freshman Lindsay Reeve (Redmond, Ore.) rounded out the Aggie line up with a 12-over-par 84 to tie for 91st.
