LAS CRUCES, N.M.-On its first-ever senior night, the New Mexico State soccer team fell to Nevada, 1-0, in double overtime, Friday, Oct. 30, at Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces, N.M. The Aggies honored goalkeeper Katie Graul and defender Cristianna Smith in their final home match of the 2009 season.
Playing in their eighth overtime match of the year, head coach Michael Needham said the Aggies keep learning from the extra time experiences.
“I thought we played well for most of the game,” Needham said. “When we did what we wanted to do, we were pretty darn good at times.”
The match was tied at 0-0 at halftime with freshman forward Crystal Burns taking both of the NM State’s shots on goal. The Aggies were more forceful offensively in the second half with junior defender Nina Yanes recording three of the Aggies’ five shots on goal including a free kick that bounced off the corner of the post in the 61st minute.
In the second overtime, the Aggies had a stellar scoring opportunity in the 104th-minute mark. On its lone corner kick of the match, junior midfielder Baili Foutz hit a strike towards the box causing a scramble that NM State couldn’t capitalize on.
The Aggies conclude the regular season at Utah State, Sunday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m.
