DENVER-Sophomore Courtney Schultz has been named Western Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 12-18. She earns this honor after leading the women's cross country team to a first place finish at Santa Clara's Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, Calif., Oct. 17.
Schultz (Cloudcroft, N.M.) marked her best finish of the season as she placed third overall and paced the Aggies with a time of 17:20. That time was her quickest of the season in a 5k and helped the NM State to the title at the Bronco invitational.
"We are very proud of her," assistant coach Meaghan Gregory said. "She has worked extremely hard this season and is very deserving of the honor."
Schultz has competed and led the Aggies in four races this season. In her first race as an Aggie, she finished in seventh overall at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational (Sept. 10) and eighth a week later at the Aggies home meet, the Kachina Classic (Sept. 19).
After a week off from competition, Schultz finished 30th overall at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla., and led the Aggies to a 10th-place finish over host school, Oklahoma State.
The Aggies will be back in action with the WAC Championships in Reno, Nev., Oct. 31.
