Matt Walter
Assistant Coach

Walter enters his fourth season as the Aggie football team’s head strength and conditioning coach.
    Known to his athletes as ‘The Punisher’ for his grueling strength, speed and agility training, Walter has elevated the Aggie football team’s off-season conditioning program to new heights. Since arriving at NMSU, Walter has guided the Aggies to break numerous school records in lifting, running and jumping. Walter also implemented the 1,100/1,200/1,300 Club where a skill player like a wide receiver set their goal for 1,100 pounds, a mid-skill like a linebacker set their goal at 1,200 pounds and a big skill like an offensive lineman set their goal at 1,300 pounds. To be a member of the 1,100/1,200/1,300 Club a players combined weight in the power clean, squat and bench press.
    He also implemented a nutrition supplement program as well as the Lifter of the Year Award, given to the most outstanding achiever during the Aggies’ off-season program. Tight end Nick Cleaver was given the award in 2007, linebacker Nathan in 2006, while linebacker Jimmy Cottrell and offensive lineman Nick Cole earned the award in 2005. Walter is also recognized a a National Speed & Explosion Association certified coach.
    Walter previously served as the head strength and conditioning coach at Southeastern Louisiana for one year. Prior to that, Walter spent one year at Louisiana Tech as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.
    After graduating from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 2001, Walter served as a graduate assistant, coaching the offensive line and tight ends, as well as taking on head strength and conditioning coach duties.
    Walter earned his master’s degree in education in 2003 and is a certified strength and conditioning Specialist. As a standout running back for Northwestern Oklahoma, Walter was named a 2000 NAIA Honorable Mention All-American as his squad finished as national runners-up. In 1999, Walter helped his team capture the NAIA National Title posting a 13-0 record.
    Matt and his wife, Suzanne, were married in April in 2007 and reside in Las Cruces.
