Track and Field Finishes Strong at Don Kirby Invite

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The New Mexico State track and field team wrapped up its final regular meet of the 2014 outdoor season in Albuquerque, N.M., at the Don Kirby Invitational on Friday, May 2nd.

The Aggies competed against rivals the UNM Lobos and the UTEP Miners at the Don Kirby Invite. The team focused on staying healthy and finishing competition strong before competing in the 2014 Western Athletic Conference Championships on May 14th.

“We did some good things today,” head coach Orin Richburg said. “We had some girls do some good things today like (Alishia) Perkins who won the 200-meter dash and set a new personal record. We also got Brianna (Cromartie) back so that was good for the team. Overall it was encouraging to see the way we competed and now we have to focus on putting it all together and getting ready for the conference meet.”

Senior Alishia Perkins earned a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.58, which now ranks as the fastest time in the WAC. She also competed in the 100-meter dash where she finished second with a time of 11.75, which now ranks as the second-fastest time in the WAC.

Junior Jenna Banegas also competed in the 100-and-200-meter dash. She finished fifth in the 100-meter with a time of 12.07 and also finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.62.

Dealing with injuries through much of the outdoor season, senior Brianna Cromartie returned for the Aggies in the 200-meter dash where she finished third with a time of 24.03. Freshman Paige Patterson also earned a sixth-place finish in the event with a time of 24.69.

Cromartie and Patterson also represented NM State in the 400-meter dash. Cromartie led the way with a fourth-place finish with a time of 55.56. She was followed closely by Patterson who finished fifth with a time of 56.09.

In the 800-meter run, the Aggies had six athletes finish in the top-10 led by sophomore Ashley Hall who finished first overall with a time of 2:17.43. Freshman Shaniece Prevot finished third with a time of 2:19.07. Junior Diana Hawk followed close behind with a fourth-place finish with a time of 2:19.09 and sophomore Kelsi Gonzalez finished fifth with a time of 2:21.46. Seniors Samantha Thompson and Kayla Nagunst finished ninth and 10th respectively. Sophomore Leah Englehart and junior Rebecca Schoeny also competed in the 800-meter run.

Junior Katie Strong led the Aggies in the 1500-meter run with a second-place finish at a time of 4:57.87. She was joined by senior Carly Porter who finished fourth with a time of 5:02.74.

The Aggies had a strong showing in the 3000-meter run where junior Megan McNally finished fourth with a time of 10:50.31. Senior Sarabel Bojorquez finished fifth with a time of 10:56.77. Seniors Gael Sanchez and Natalie Gomez also ran the 3000-meter run.

The team of Perkins, Banegas, Patterson and junior Kendra Walker made up the Aggies’ 4x100-meter relay team. Together, they earned a second-place finish with a time of 46.39.

Perkins, Banegas, Cromartie and Patterson also teamed with sophomore Latrice Brooks to compete in the 4x400-meter relay where they finished first with a time of 3:47.92, which is now the second-fastest time in the WAC.

Junior Tiffany Gerber set the best distance among WAC throwers in the javelin throw at the Don Kirby with her throw of 43.08m (141’4”), which earned her a second-place finish. Junior Nicolette Serrao finished third with a throw of 37.91m (124’4”), and freshman Alexandra Winebark earned a fourth-place finish with her throw of 30.82m (101’1”).

Freshman Akuadasou Ezenyilimba had a strong showing as she earned a third-place finish in the shot put, discus and hammer throw at the Don Kirby Invite. In the shot put, Ezenyilimba had a throw of 12.19m (40’0”). She had a throw of 43.10m (141’5”) in the discus and she had a throw of 48.77m (160’0”) in the hammer throw, which now ranks her eighth in the WAC.

The Aggies have a week off from competition before traveling to Orem, Utah to compete in the 2014 WAC Outdoor Championships beginning on May 14.
