Aggies Dominate Arkansas State 6-1

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – While getting back to the New Mexico State Tennis Center to finish the regular season, the NM State women’s tennis team pulled off a 6-1 win over Arkansas State on Friday, April 11. NM State improves to 8-11, while the RedWolves move to 6-8.

“Ashvarya (Shrivastava) continued her winning streak and everybody else fought extremely hard,” head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “I am very proud of the energy that they showed in this match today. It gives us a lot of motivation as we prepare for Idaho on Sunday.”

Sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava won her No. 1 singles match 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 to tally her 11th straight singles victory this season and improve her record to 13-3.

NM State also saw a win at the No. 2 spot when junior Susana Alcaraz took just two sets to defeat her opponent, putting her at a three-match winning streak this season. Junior Denise Van Der Ben picked up a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at the fourth court, while the Aggies also won at the fifth and sixth positions in straight sets.

In doubles play, Shrivastava and senior Annemike Witte teamed up for an8-5 win at the top spot. The duo is on a three-match winning streak and is now 11-6 on the year. The Aggies swept the doubles matches as senior Ros-Polly Nguyen started her senior weekend off with an 8-3 win with the help of freshman Brittany Collens. The third Aggie win in partner play was an 8-3 victory by Alcaraz and freshman Marie-Pier Thiffault.

NM State continues at home to conclude the regular season with its only conference match this season on Sunday, April 13. The Aggies welcome the Idaho Vandals at 9 a.m., while honoring the two NM State seniors between doubles and singles play.
