FULLERTON, CALIF. – The New Mexico State women’s tennis team took a 4-3 win over Cal State Fullerton on Friday, March 28. NM State dropped the doubles point but came back to win in singles competition and marked its second road win in less than a week.
“I am very proud of how much heart the team showed today after two disappointing losses,” head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “This was a very positive way to finish the week. I had to shuffle the lineup once again due to injuries but they found a way fight through and win today.”
CSF took the doubles point with an 8-4 win at the No. 1 court and an 8-7 (14-12) win at the third spot. Senior Annemieke Witte and sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava teamed up at the second spot to help NM State avoid the sweep with an 8-6 win.
NM State dominated in the singles matches, winning four of the six. Shrivastava won a set-set match at No. 2, while junior Susana Alcaraz and Witte each won their matches in straight sets at the No. 3 and 4 courts, respectively.
The other Aggie win of the day, helping NM State to the team win was junior Denise Van Der Ben, who came out for a 6-4, 6-0 win at the sixth court to defeat Rebekkah Ermac. Senior Ros-Polly Nguyen battled at the fifth spot for three sets before being defeated.
The Aggies now get back to the NM State Tennis Center to finish out the season with four home matches. NM State welcomes Western New Mexico at 2 p.m. on April 2 before hosting Tarleton State on April 4.
