NM State Upended by UC Irvine 4-0

IRVINE, CALIF. – The New Mexico State women's tennis team was defeated 4-0 by UC Irvine on Thursday, March 27. The Aggies were downed in the doubles point and then dropped three singles matches before the match was called.

The Aggies gave up the doubles point to UCI with losses coming at the no. 1 and 2 courts. Freshman Gabrielle Joyce and junior Susana Alcaraz battled at the top doubles court before falling 8-2, while the other Aggie pair, senior Ros-Poly Nguyen and sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava fell 8-3 at the second court.

In doubles play, NM State saw a two-set loss a the first two courts, while Nguyen battled to a tiebreaker before being defeated at the No. 4 spot 6-4, 7-6(2). Leaving three courts unfinished after UCI clinched the win, senior Annemieke Witte was leading 6-4, 4-0 at the fifth court before the match was stopped.

"Ashvarya and Annemieke were both winning they matches when it was clinched," head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "We are still struggling with some injuries,  so we weren't able to play with a full lineup. Hopefully tomorrow we can bounce back against Cal State Fullerton."

NM State continues on the road on Friday, March 28 by making the short trip to Fullerton, Calif. to meet Cal State Fullerton. The match is set for 2:30 p.m. (MT)
