Women’s Tennis Loses Tough Battle to Abilene Christian

Release:  02/23/2014

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women’s tennis team suffered its first home loss of the spring schedule, losing 4-3 to Abilene Christian on Sunday at the NM State Tennis Center.  The Aggies fall to 4-5 during the spring while the Wildcats improve to 7-2.

“We played a very tough match today,” Aggie head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “This loss is a great learning experience for us. We are going to be ready next time we are in this situation. I am very proud of how the girls fought today.”

The day started with NM State losing the doubles point.  The only doubles winners for the Aggies were senior Annemieke Witte and sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava who defeated Emily Conrad and Nada Marjanovic of ACU, 8-7.

The doubles points would be the deciding factor of the day as NM State and the Wildcats split the six singles’ matches, each winning three.

The three singles’ winners for the Aggies included junior Susana Alcaraz at the No. 1 position (6-4, 6-4), Shrivastava at No. 4 (6-4, 6-2) and freshman Brittany Collens at the six position (6-3, 7-5).

Junior Denise Van Der Ben and sophomore Chloe Jolliff lost their matches in three sets, Jolliff at No. 2 (6-3, 0-6, 4-6) and Van Der Ben at the three spot (6-4, 2-6, 4-6).  If either had won, the match would have gone to the Aggies.

“(We) started out dropping the doubles point but came out strong in the singles, winning five out of six first sets,” Fernandez said. “Todays match could have really gone either way. We won at the No. 1, 4 and 6 singles in straight sets. We lost at 2 and 5 very close to get the match to 3-3. The deciding point came to down to Van Der Ben at No. 3 and she lost a very hard fought match 6-4 in the third set to clinch the match for ACU.”

NM State will now hit the road for three matches in Texas next weekend, beginning with a matchup versus Stephen F. Austin on Friday, Feb. 28, in Nacagdoches, Texas.

“We had won three in a row at home and I know that we will keep getting better with every match,” Fernandez said. “ACU beat UTEP and Southern Miss yesterday, and I knew we were going to be in for a battle today. All of the matches were extremely close.  As long as we keep giving ourselves opportunities to win, then I am happy with the team.”
