LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The New Mexico State men’s tennis team ended the weekend with a 4-2 loss to the Arizona Wildcats on Sunday, Feb. 23. The Aggies saw two singles wins and one win in doubles play. The loss brings the Aggies to a 7-4 record this season.
NM State surrendered the doubles point with the Wildcats claiming wins at the first two courts, however, sophomore Strahinja Trecakov and junior Germain Degardin stopped Arizona from the sweep with an 8-7 win at the third doubles court.
Down 1-0 going into single play, NM State’s Patrick Pfister with a three set, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over Will Kneale at court No. 5. The second Aggie win was at the fourth court where Degardin defeated Mario Urquidi in two sets, 6-4 and 6-2.
Redshirt sophomore Paul Denele battled three sets before eventually falling 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 to his opponent at the second spot. Two other Aggies went down in straight sets, while the sixth court remained unfinished as UA had already claimed the 4-2 win over NM State.
The Aggies now head out for a long road swing beginning with matches against UTSA on Saturday, March 8 at 9 a.m., followed by a dual against UT Arlington at 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 9.
