“Our main goal today was to see how quickly we could make adjustments and I think we accomplished that,” associate head coach Cat Heifner said. “We made adjustments defensively and in the circle and I am pleased with how we hit the ball also.”
Right-hand pitcher Celisha Walker earned the win after pitching six complete in the circle and allowing two hits by the Cardinals and throwing two strikeouts. Sophomore catcher Tatum Reedy went 2-for-2 on the day and recorded her first homerun of the season to lead off the sixth inning.
After going two full innings scoreless, the Aggies scored three runs off hits by Rodriguez and sophomore Fiana Finau. Rodriguez earned 2 RBI during the inning when she brought in junior Chelsea Dohrwardt and Reedy for the first two runs of the game. Finau came up with an RBI double to the left side to bring around the third run.
The Aggies scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The first coming off a sacrifice fly by Reedy before sophomore Brennalyn Nakamura plated junior Malena Padilla off a fielder’s choice play at the first base line making it a 5-0 game.
NM State held Incarnate Word with no runs for six innings ending the game with a run rule at 8-0 during the bottom of the sixth inning. Reedy started the inning with a solo homerun making way for senior Kristi Covarrubia to double her way on base. Rodriguez hit a double up the middle, scoring Corvarrubia and giving the Aggies a walk-off.
The Aggies continue on the road to the Eller Media Stadium Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. on Feb. 28-Mar. 2. NM State plays five games on the weekend starting with Weber State at 10 a.m. and Seton Hall at 12:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28. On Saturday, the Aggies meet Binghampton at 4:45 p.m. and UNLV at 9:15 p.m. They finish off the weekend against DePaul University on Sunday Mar. 2 at 11:15 a.m. The Aggies travel back to face UTEP in El Paso, Texas on Mar. 4 at 6:00 p.m.
