LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico state men’s tennis team topped the Idaho Vandals 4-0 on Sunday, Feb. 16 at the NM State Tennis Center. The Aggies are now 5-3 on the season and 1-0 in Western Athletic Conference play.
“We are playing great right now,” head coach Carlos Vargas said. “We played with a lot of heart and our best team effort so far this season. It was amazing to come back with this after yesterday’s lackluster effort. Now we have a tough match ahead of us tomorrow against Kansas City, so we will need to keep our focus.”
The Aggies came to a quick defeat over the Vandals with the doubles point with a 6-3 win at court two from junior Paul Denele and sophomore Naveen Manivannan. NM State sophomore Strahinja Trecakov and junior Germain Degardin also picked up a 6-3 win at the third doubles court.
With the doubles point secure, NM State took its victory off the first, fifth and sixth courts in singles play. Trecakov defeated Odon Barta 6-3, 6-4 at court No. 1, while junior Patrick Pfister also won his match in two sets (6-1, 6-2) at the fifth position. The final Aggie to finish his match for the win was Manivannan, who won 6-2, 6-1 at the sixth court over Zedde Andrews.
NM State continues with conference play on Monday, Feb. 17 to face Kansas City at 1 p.m. at the NM State Tennis Center.
