LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women’s tennis team made it a clean sweep this weekend after defeating Northern Arizona, 5-2, on Sunday at the NM State Tennis Center.  The Aggies, who move to 3-4 in the spring, also defeated Lamar on Friday at home and have won three out of their last four matches.

“This was a good weekend for us against some tough competition,” Aggie head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We are still improving with every match and I am very proud of how this team has come together.”

The day did not begin well for NM State.  The Aggies could only win one of the doubles’ matches en route to losing the doubles’ point.  The only winning duo for NM State was senior Annemieke Witte and sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava who defeated NAU’s Sarah Maria Spruch and Olivia Headford, 8-3.

The Aggies bounced back in singles play, however, winning all but one of the six singles matches.  Senior Ros-Polly Nguyen battled Lumberjack Emelia Box at the No. 1 position, easily winning the first set, 6-1.  Unfortunately, Nguyen would fall in the final two sets 6-4, 6-2.

Nguyen’s loss at the 1 spot would be the only singles loss of the day for NM State.  In fact, the Aggies would win the 2-6 positions without dropping a single set.

Juniors Susana Alcaraz (7-5, 7-5) and Denise Van Der Ben (6-2, 6-1), Shrivastava (6-1, 6-4), Witte (6-3, 6-1) and freshman Brittany Collens (6-3, 6-1) all won in straight sets.

“(We) started slowly in the doubles only getting one win,” Fernandez said, “but we came out really strong in the singles winning all six first sets, and ended up winning five out of six.”

NM State will continue its home swing with two more matches at the NM State Tennis Center next weekend.  The Aggies will host Southern Mississippi on Friday, Feb. 21, and Abilene Christian on Sunday, Feb. 23.

“We are playing extremely hard at every position,” Fernandez said. “If we can keep playing like this then good things will keep happening.”
