LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State NM State dropped two games on the opening day of the Troy Cox Classic on Friday, Feb. 14. NM State fell 5-0 to Texas A&M Corpus Christi and then was upended by Iowa State 13-3. The Aggies move to 2-5 on the season.

In game one, the Aggies sent the Islanders away in order in the first two innings, but a fielding error at third let Texas A&M Corpus Christi score the first run after two runners reached on a pair of singles.

NM State was sent away in order in the third before allowing the Islanders to score two in the top of the fourth.  Senior righthander Celisha Walker gave up a double before letting the Islanders plate two on a homerun before junior Nikki Diaz came into the circle to get the Aggies out of the inning.

NM State got four on base in the home half of the fourth, but was unable to turn runs. TAMUCC hit its second home run of the game, a solo shot over the left side, in their half of the fifth, but not before NM State saw a double play come from sophomore Emma Adams and junior Kelsey Dodd.

The Aggies went down in order in the fifth and the sixth, while the Islanders plated their fifth run of the day with a single RBI in the sixth after the runner reached base on a single to left field in the top of the sixth.

Walker pitched three complete innings, giving up three of the runs, while Diaz worked four complete with two runs given up. Dodd went 1-for-2 on the game with a walk. She got a single through the left side in the bottom of the fourth.

In game two versus Iowa State, NM State got things started in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run by sophomore Fiana Finau after Brennalyn Nakamura reached base on a single to right field.

The Aggies left the bases loaded with Cyclones in the first and second, and maintained the lead until the top of the fifth, when ISU took its big lead with 10 runs off six hits and a pair of Aggie errors.

NM State was sent away in their half of the fifth and saw Adams reach on a walk in the sixth. ISU came back in their half of the seventh for three more runs off four hits to pick up the 13-3 win over NM State.

NM State continues with the Troy Cox Classic on Saturday, Feb. 15 with Northern Colorado at 3:30 p.m. and Iowa State at 6 p.m.
