Release:  02/02/2014

TUCSON, Ariz. – The New Mexico State women’s tennis team began spring competition on Sunday by losing 4-0 to the University of Arizona, a top-100 team, at the Robson Tennis Center.

“It was a tough first match of the season versus #73-ranked Arizona,” Aggie head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We competed well but the nerves showed in our first match. It was great to see the team play against a strong team.”

NM State lost three singles matches and two doubles, the remaining matches remained unfinished.

Aggie sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava, playing at the No. 2 spot, lost 6-1, 6-0 to Kim Stubbe.  Junior Denise Van Der Ben, meanwhile, lost to the 110th-ranked player in the country, Akila James, 6-2, 6-2 and sophomore Mia Brandt lost 6-3, 6-2 to Laura Oldham.

On the doubles side, the NM State duos of Shrivastava and senior Annemieke Witte, along with freshman Marie-Pier Thiffault and sophomore Chole Joliff, both lost their respective matches 6-1.

The Aggies will remain in Tucson as they will now face the University of San Francisco on Monday, Feb. 3, at the Robson Tennis Center.  The matches are scheduled for an 11 a.m. (MT) start.

“This match gives us a great idea of what we need to continue to work on to get to the next level,” Fernandez said. “I really liked what I saw out there today, the girls played hard and I know we will get better with each match.  We will be ready to play San Francisco tomorrow, another tough opponent.”
