Courtesy: New Mexico State University
Release:  10/19/2013

OREM, Utah – The New Mexico State volleyball team lost its second straight match falling to Utah Valley 3-0 (16-25, 23-25, 18-25) in Orem, Utah, Saturday, Oct. 19.  The Aggies fall to 11-10 overall and 6-2 in Western Athletic Conference play, while UVU moves to 7-2 in league play.

The Aggies were out-blocked 11-8 and outhit .301-.130.  The NM State offense struggled to make plays marking 21 attack errors compared to the Wolverines committing only 13 errors.  Senior Lauren Loerch led the Aggies with 10 kills on a .273 hitting percentage while she posted her fourth double-double of the year marking 10 digs on the night.

Redshirt sophomore Gwen Murphy could arguably be the only Aggie to play with consistency as she posted seven kills on 10 attempts for a .700 hitting percentage.  Senior Stephanie Ziegler added five kills, while sophomore Bradley Nash, senior Preslie Alexander and senior Desiree Scott tallied four kills each.

The Aggies struggled offensively hitting .069 in set one with only 11 kills on 30 attempts with eight errors.  NM State never took the lead in the set and fell 25-16. NM State led for much of set two and was up 21-19, but UVU used a 4-0 run to take a 23-21 lead.  The Aggies tied it at 23 when freshman libero Ashley Mireles marked one of the three NM State service aces.  A kill by a Wolverine attacker combine with an Aggie attack error closed out the set 25-23.  The Aggie offense hit .149 as a team in the set.

Set two was tied at 1-1 and 2-2 but a kill by the Wolverine kill leader (Cassie Wahlin) gave UVU a lead that would not be relinquished.  NM State eventually pulled to within three at 19-16 and 20-17 but that was as close as it would get late in the set.  The Aggie offense could not get going marking only nine kills on 24 attempts.

The Aggies return home and continue WAC play when they take on Grand Canyon, Thursday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. (MT).  Please check your local listings as the match is scheduled to air on TV as a part of the AggieVision Productions.
