EL PASO, Texas—The New Mexico State cross country team had a strong performance in El Paso, Texas, in the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational on Friday, Sept. 13. The women’s team took home a first-place finish, while the men finished third on the day.
For the second time this season, the women’s team swept the top three spots individually. Junior Diana Hawk finished first overall with a time of 14:05.2. This marks the third time Hawk has finished first in the three races this season.
Hawk was followed by senior Sarabel Bojorquez, who finished second overall with a time 14:24.3. Junior Megan McNally held the third spot with a time of 14:35.6.
Senior Gael Sanchez finished sixth with a time of 15:02.3 to wrap up the Aggies top-10 finishers.
The Aggies scored 26 points, which defeated El Paso Community College with 39 points and UTEP, who scored 65 points.
“It was a really good race today,” assistant coach Christopher Huff said. “It was a tactical race. Diana (Hawk) led pretty much the entire way and finished well ahead of the pack. The team did really well out there today.”
In the men’s 5K run, the Aggies were led by junior Nathan Starr, who finished in fifth place with a time of 18:01.3. This is the third time that Starr has finished first for the Aggies.
Junior Hab Rubio finished in eighth with a time of 18:22.0. He was followed by junior Evan Bekes, who finished 11th with a time of 18:35.6. Sophomore Chris Silva finished right behind Rubio with a time of 18:39.5.
“Hab (Rubio) had a gutsy race today,” Huff said. “He really took a chance and led for a large portion of the race before Nathan (Starr) was able to catch up to him. Overall, it was a really good day.”
For the men, they scored 53 points as a team. This ranked third behind UTEP’s 23 points and El Paso CC with 46 points.
The Aggies will have next week off before hosting the Kachina Classic on Sept. 28.
