Aggies Drop Fourth Straight; Lose in Straight Sets to No. 10 UCLA

HONOLULU – The New Mexico State volleyball team fell to 1-4 on the year after dropping its match, 25-15, 25-22, 25-12 to No. 10 UCLA in the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday, Sept. 6.  UCLA is now 5-0 this season after making it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year and winning the national title in 2011.

Senior outside hitter Lauren Loerch led NM State with nine kills and a .368 hitting percentage as her team was held to a .141 hitting percentage.  Senior Ciara Brown tallied 12 assists with freshman Aleisha Coates and sophomore Bradley Nash posting five digs each on the defensive side of the net.  NM State was out-blocked 10-5 and out-dug 28-23 while allowing the Bruins to hit .395 on the night.

The Aggies got off to a rough start offensively hitting .091 as a team with seven kills and five errors. The Aggies fell behind 6-2 early in the set but pulled to within one point at 6-5.  UCLA went on a 3-1 run to take a 9-6 lead then went up by as many as 11 at 22-11.  UCLA closed out the set winning by the score of 25-15.

NM State played much more competitive in set two marking 15 kills and hitting .270 as a team.  The Aggies took a 6-2 lead but the talented Bruins came back and tied it at 7-7.  The Aggies went on a 4-1 run with Nash capping it off with a service ace.  A kill by Preslie Alexander gave the Aggies a 15-11 lead but UCLA came back to regain the lead at 18-17.  Late in the set, Loerch served up an ace to even it at 22 but a couple of kills by the Bruins gave the Bruins a 25-22 victory.

The Aggies fell behind early in set three by the score of 7-3 and tried to fight back by pulling to within two at 10-8 with Desiree Scott marking her final kill of the night. UCLA used a 10-1 run to got up 20-9 and finished the match scoring the final two points.
