LAS VEGAS (Aug. 30)-The New Mexico State soccer team recorded its first shutout of the season with a 1-0 win over LIU Brooklyn in the first match of the UNLV Nike Invitational. The Aggies improved to 2-1-0 on the season.
After a scoreless first half, the Aggies only needed three minutes to break the tie in the second period. Junior forward Layla Todd gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead with a score in the 48th minute from 15-yards out. It was Todd’s second goal of the season, and junior midfielder Katie Smith recorded her first assist of the season on the play.
“We actually played really slow in the first half,” head coach Blair Quinn said. “We were playing at their speed and trying to out play them. I challenged them to play at the pace we play in practice and play faster. We scored a goal three minutes in, and it was a very nice goal.”
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter recorded the shutout and grabbed a season-high five saves in the win.
“The back line played really solid,” he said. “Jess (Schutter) made two huge saves. We ask her to make two saves a game to keep us in it, and she made two huge saves.
“We played a lot of players and everyone that came in off the bench elevated us. We got better as we subbed and that’s such a huge step for us.”
The Aggies continue the invitational against Portland State, Sept. 1 at 11:30 a.m.
