RUIDOSO, N.M.—The New Mexico State University Cross Country team had a strong showing in the Texas Tech/New Mexico State Dual to open the 2013 season in Ruidoso, N.M., on Friday.
The NM State women’s team finished second overall in the three-mile run with 30 points, falling just shy of Texas Tech’s 26 points. The Aggies were led by junior Diana Hawk, who finished first overall with a time of 18:02.40. Junior Megan McNally finished second for the Aggies and fourth overall with a time of 18:32.10 in her first competition for NM State.
Senior Sarabel Bojorquez finished third for the Aggies and sixth overall with a time of 19:00.30, she was followed by senior Gael Sanchez who finished eighth overall with a time of 19:16.30. Senior Christiana Barela finished fifth for the Aggies and 11th overall with a time of 20:20.30.
“It was good to get back out there and running,” assistant coach Christopher Huff said. “It was good to work out the jitters and get back into the swing of the season. It was a great beginning of the season for the girls.”
The Aggie men were led by junior Nathan Starr, who finished first for the Aggies and sixth overall with a time of 22:10.20 in the four-mile run. Starr was followed by Evan Bekes who finished ninth overall with a time of 22:32.20, and sophomore Christopher Silva finished 10th overall with a time of 22:32.60.
“It was great to get out there and get that first race under our belt heading to UNM,” coach Huff said.
The Aggies will travel to Albuquerque to compete in the Lobo Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 7.
