WACO, TEXAS—The New Mexico State University track and field team completed the Michael Johnson/Dr. Pepper Classic on Saturday, April 20, by claiming titles in the 400m and the 3,000m steeplechase.
In the 100m, junior Alishia Perkins finished 11th overall with a time of 12.07. Freshman Cherish Morrison also competed in the event, finishing eighth overall in her heat with a time of 12.34.
In the 200m, Morrison and sophomore Kendra Walker finished sixth and seventh overall respectively. Morrison ran a time of 24.94 and Walker ran a time of 25.20. Junior Zoe Meade also competed in the 200m, finishing 11th overall with a time of 25.41. Freshman Kelsi Gonzales and senior Deserae Cota also competed in the event.
In the 400m, senior LaSasha Aldredge and junior Brianna Cromartie finished first and second overall in their heat, posting the top times overall in the 400m for the meet. Aldredge ran a time of 53.15 and Cromartie finished with a time of 53.28. Cromartie’s time was an improvement on her career-best time and improved upon her school record at second overall.
Two Aggies finished in the top five in the 800m as well. Freshman Latrice Brooks finished first overall in her heat with a time of 2:15.73 and junior Kayla Nagunst finished fourth overall in the same heat with a time of 2:17.24.
In the 1,500m, sophomore Diana Hawk finished second overall with a time of 4:33.73. Junior Carly Porter finished sixth in the same heat with a time of 4:48.97.
In the 5,000m, junior Sarabel Bojorquez finished second overall with a time of 17:44.43, earning a spot in the NM State record books with the ninth-best time.
In the 100m hurdles, freshman Alysha Bolduc finished 11th overall with a time of 15.36. Cota also competed in this event. Bolduc also competed in the 400m hurdles where she finished sixth overall with a time of 1:06.01.
In the steeplechase, junior Gael Sanchez finished first overall with a time of 11:22.05, followed by junior Christiana Barela who finished second overall with a time of 11:38.73. Sanchez moved up to seventh all-time for NM State and Barela moved up to ninth all-time. Sophomore Caroline Lewiecki finished fourth overall with a time of 12:10.43.
In the 4x100m, Perkins, Aldredge, Cromartie and Walker finished fourth overall with a time of 45.57, to place third all-time for NM State.
For field events, Meade competed in the long jump where she marked a distance of 18-07.00 (5.66m) to finish 10th overall. Senior Horlexus Willis competed in the triple jump where she marked a distance of 37-06.75 (11.45m) for 10th overall. Senior Kelsey Brennan competed in the javelin where she finished eighth overall with a throw of 139-10 (42.63m). She also competed in the shot put.
The Aggies will travel to Lubbock, Texas, for the Red Raider Invitational on Thursday, April 25.
