LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State baseball team struggled offensively against Texas State losing 10-3 at Presley Askew Field, Saturday, March 23. The series is now tied with the rubber-match scheduled for Sunday, March 24 at 1:05 p.m. (MT).
The Aggies fall to 13-11 overall and 1-1 in Western Athletic Conference play after posting three runs on six hits while committing three errors. Texas State (8-14, 1-1 WAC) tallied 10 runs on 13 hits with only one error.
It seemed like it would be a pitcher’s dual with no runs crossing the plate for the first three innings. NM State starting pitcher senior Ryan Beck was credited with the loss as he allowed four earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. He is now 4-1 on the season.
Beck worked efficiently for the first three innings of the game marking three strikeouts in the second and retiring three straight batters in the third. The Bobcat offense picked up Beck’s pitches in the fourth crossing the plate five times on five hits.
The Bobcat starter worked 7.0 innings and tallied seven K’s as he allowed three runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Quinnton Mack, senior Kyle Phillips and freshman Derek Umphres each marked an RBI that inning. Phillips lead the Aggies going 2-of-3 with one run scored.
NM State finished the evening using six pitchers with senior Evan Mott wrapping up the game working 2.0 innings, striking out two batters while not allowing a run to score.
The Aggies and Bobcats decide the series, Sunday, March 24 at Presley Askew Field with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. (MT). The game airs on KSNM AM 570 in Las Cruces with Jeff Matthews giving the play-by-play action.
