LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The New Mexico State men's tennis team battled to a 4-0 win over the Western New Mexico Mustangs on Sunday afternoon to improve to an 8-4 record this season.
After NM State took hold of the doubles point, the team kept the momentum going for three singles wins to take the match.
At the No. 1 doubles spot, Luis Ramirez and Marc Westgate battled the Mustang duo before upended the pair with a 9-7 decision. The next two courts went in favor of NM State as well, giving the Aggies the 1-0 lead.
As singles play commenced, it took the Aggies just three courts to claim the win over WNMU. At the second court, Daniel Fernandez worked for his eighth singles win of the season, moving his individual record to 8-3 on the season.
Paul Denele and Patrick Pfister worked for wins at the fifth and sixth courts in straight sets, helping the Aggies seal the win. Denele worked at the fifth spot for a 6-2, 6-4 win, while Pfister battled a similar match with a 6-0 win in game one and a 6-1 win in the second game.
With the Aggies notching the necessary four points for the win, courts one, three and four were left unfinished.
NM State is booked for its final non-conference match at the NM State Tennis Center against UT Permian Basin on Tuesday, March 19 at 1 p.m. The Aggies then heads to Lubbock, Texas to meet No. 47 Texas Tech on Saturday, March 23.
