LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State baseball team (1-1) opened the 2013 season splitting the double header against UW-Milwaukee (1-1) at Presley Askew Field, Friday, Feb. 15. NM State won game one 4-3 in ten innings and fell 11-0 in game two.
GAME ONE RECAP
Junior outfielder Michael Medina hit a walk-off single to right field that scored pinch runner Brandon Cooper from second base to pick up the first win of the year. Cooper ran for designated hitter Michael Paulson, who got on base with a single to right field.
NM State started the game scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning when junior Tanner Rust crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by senior Bobby Lecount. The Panthers took a 2-1 lead in the third after two singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly.
The Aggies tied the game at two-a-piece when Lecount tallied his second RBI of the game on a single through the left side. Lecount finished the game going 2-for-3 at the dish with a walk and two RBI. Both teams scored a run in the sixth but it was the home team that came out victorious.
Senior Ryan Beck picked up the win as he was in the game when NM State scored the go-ahead run. He threw 2.0 innings with two strikeouts and one walk. Starting pitcher Adam Mott went 8.0 innings and struck out seven batters while giving up only two walks, all while facing 33 batters.
GAME TWO RECAP
The Aggies posted three hits and committed three errors to fall 11-0. NM State stuck with the Panthers through seven innings before giving up four runs in the top of the eighth.
Starting pitcher Christopher Bradley pitched well as he held the visiting to two only two runs (one earned), while striking out seven batters. He held UWM scoreless for four innings before he was pulled in the top of the sixth. The five relievers used in the game struggled giving up four runs in the eighth and five more in the ninth to pull away from NM State.
The Panthers relied on the arm of Mike Schneider who threw for 8.0 innings and allowed three walks.
