Aggies set records in 200m, 400m, 4x400m

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-The New Mexico State University track and field team concluded the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Saturday, Feb. 2, highlighted by three new all-time school records.

Sophomore Jenna Banegas placed seventh overall in the 60m with a time of 7.59, improving upon her career-best record to keep her at second all-time for NM State.

In the 200m, three different Aggies placed in the top 10 overall.  Junior Alishia Perkins placed first overall with a time of 24.17, breaking the previous all-time school record set by teammate Brianna Cromartie last week.  Banegas placed fifth overall with a time of 24.56, bumping her up to fifth all-time for NM State.  Sophomore Kendra Walker finished eighth overall with a time of 24.99, tying her for ninth all-time for NM State.  Freshman Cherish Morrison also competed in the event.

Two Aggies landed in the top five overall finishes in the 400m.  Cromartie finished second overall with a time of 54.76, setting a new all-time school record for the event.  Senior LaSasha Aldredge finished third with a time of 55.13.  Freshman Kelsi Gonzales also competed in the event.

In the 800m, sophomore Diana Hawk finished ninth overall with a time of 2:19.18.  Senior Kayla Nagunst finished 11th overall with a time of 2:19.79, placing her eighth all-time for NM State. 

Hawk also competed in the 1-mile where she placed second overall with a time of 4:58.64.  Senior Madelyn Stoltze finished 10th overall with a time of 5:13.30.  Junior Sarabel Bojorquez and sophomore Caroline Lewiecki also competed in the event.

In the 3,000m, sophomore Victoria Trujillo placed 10th overall and junior Rylie Hightower placed right behind for 11th overall.

Senior Deserae Cota marked a distance of 17-10.25 (5.44m) in the long jump to place seventh overall.  Senior Kelsey Breanna notched a distance of 39-8.75 (12.11m) in the shot put, which moved her to 10th all-time for NM State.

In the 4x400m, Aldredge, Perkins, Banegas and Cromartie teammed up to set a new all-time school record when the group finished first overall with a time of 3:42.13.

"With the bulk of the regular season for indoor track and field over, we have to be a lot smarter and more focused so our plans for the WAC can come to fruition," said assistant track and field coach Christopher Huff.

Next week, the Aggies will split between two meets.  One squad will compete at the Don Kirby Collegiate Open in Albuquerque, N.M., on Feb. 8-9 while another team will travel to Seattle, Wash., for the Husky Classic on Feb. 8-9.
