Aggies Fall 3-1 on the Road

ARLINGTON, Texas - The New Mexico State volleyball team dropped its road match to UT-Arlington, 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 23-25, 25-27) in Arlington, Texas, Thursday, Oct. 18.

NM State had more kills (54-48) than the Mavericks and a better hitting percentage (.140-.086) but it was not enough to earn a victory away from the Pan American Center. The Aggies fall to 13-7 on the year and 7-3 in Western Athletic Conference play, while UTA goes to 8-14 overall and 4-6 in league play.

The Aggies dropped set one 25-23 after falling behind early on.  The set was tied 12 ties and the Aggies had the lead twice but nine attack errors hurt NM State as it finished with a .080 hitting percentage.

NM State dominated set two holding the Mavericks to a negative .225 hitting percentage with NM State posting seven total team blocks.  Junior Desiree Scott, who finished the night with 12 kills and eight total blocks on the night, posted three kills in the second set to lead the Aggies to a 25-12 win. Junior Lauren Loerch also added three kills in the set while she also finished with 12 on the night.

Set three saw the Aggies post 14 kills with sophomore Meredith Hays marking six but the Mavericks marked four blocks and two service aces to win 25-23.  The set was tied nine times and the Aggies had the lead at 19-17 when Loerch hammered down a kill but UTA scored its last point on a service error to take a two sets to one lead.

The Aggies tried to battle in set four tied the set 11 times including ties at points 23, 24 and 25.  UTA ended the match on a service at to upset the Aggies who went into the match sitting in a tie for second in the WAC standings.

Hays finished with her ninth double-double of the year as she added 11 digs as junior Hannah Walker ended the evening with a match-high 24 digs.  Junior Ciara Brown marked a match-high 24 assists as sophomore Maggi Jo Keffury finished with 15 of her own.

The Aggies now head to Ruston, La. to face Louisiana Tech in another WAC match up.  The match is set for 1 p.m. (MT), Saturday, Oct. 20 with radio coverage in Las Cruces on KSNM AM 570.  Jay Sanderson will be giving the play-by-play action with the broadcast also available online at www.NMStateSports.com for a fee.
