LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Sept. 12)-In a fiercely contested I-10 rivalry match, the New Mexico State soccer team fell to UTEP, 2-1.

"That was a great game," head coach Blair Quinn said. "That was absolutely our best game of the year, and it's unfortunate for the kids it was a loss in the end. It was a great, great effort and really well-played game. It wasn't just the effort, we played really good soccer."

The Aggies (1-5-1) controlled the tempo for the majority of the match and posted 12 shots in the contest. Sophomore forward Jennae Cambra, senior midfielder Elise Nordin and junior midfielder Daisy Hernandez each contributed to the offense with two shots. Defensively, NM State only allowed two shots in the first half, and junior goalkeeper Mikaela Bitner, who entered the game in the second half, grabbed a match-high five saves.

NM State trailed UTEP, 1-0, at halftime following a 19th-minute score. In the second half, the Miners had a 2-0 lead after a goal in the 61st minute. The Aggies responded less than three minutes later, when Nordin fired a free kick into the left top of the net to cut the UTEP advantage to 2-1. The score was a career first for Nordin.

The Aggies hit the road for a pair of matches at Montana, Friday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. and in-state rival New Mexico, Sunday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m.
