NM State Earns a Share of WAC Title with 15-2 Win Over SJSU, Sunday

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The New Mexico State baseball team earned a share of the regular season Western Athletic Conference title with a 15-2 win over San Jose State, Sunday, May 20, at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

The Aggies finished the regular season 35-20 and 11-7 in WAC play earning is first WAC title in school history and the program's first title league title since 2002. NM State shares the title with Sacramento State and Nevada.

The Aggies enters the 2012 WAC Baseball Tournament, May 23-27, in Mesa, Ariz at Hohokam Stadium, as the No. 1 seed, followed by Sacramento State as the No. 2 seed and Nevada at No. 3.

NM State will play the winner of the lowest seed available on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. (MT) in the double-elimination tournament. The Aggies go into the tournament winning four out of the last five games with their only loss to in-state rival New Mexico in 11-innings.

The Aggies finished Sunday's game scoring 15 runs on 18 hits, while committing just one error. Junior Michael Ormseth of Las Cruces, N.M. earned his eighth win of the season as he threw six innings, giving up only one run and striking out four.  Junior left-hander Trey Ross entered the game in the seventh and recorded a strikeout before junior Evan Mott came in to finish the game.  Mott jumped on the mound with the bases loaded that came on an error by the Aggies. It was the Aggies' lone error in the series.

Mott would get out of the inning on a second-out sacrifice fly and while the final out came on a pop up in foul ground on the first base side. Sophomore first baseman Tanner Rust led the Aggie offense going 4-of-4 at the plate with a triple, three runs scored and two RBI. Senior Tanner Waite had a great day as a lead-off hitter picking up four walks and going 1-of-2 with a double.

Junior third baseman Bobby Lecount, who leads the Aggies in home runs, blasted a two-run shot in the sixth to boost the NM State momentum and the team to a victory.
