LAS CRUCES, N.M.-New Mexico State head coach Orin Richburg recently announced that seven student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to attend school and join the NM State track and field team starting the fall of 2010.
With the signees that Richburg brought on for the upcoming season, he and his staff are hopeful that the new additions will bring some depth to the program.
"With the signees that we have you can' see that we tried to cover a lot of the areas that we have deficiency in," Richburg said. "We feel that out of the signees that we have so far, that it gives us another opportunity to go into the WAC conference and compete at a little higher level than what we are doing right now."
Among the new class of student-athletes, NM State signed athletes to cover all aspects of the sport including sprints, jumps, distance and a national champion thrower.
HORLEXUS WILLIS: Willis is a jumper and sprinter from WW Samuel High School in Dallas, Texas. As a senior, she clocked a personal best time of 57.17 in the 400 meters. In the 2009 season, Willis marked 18 feet 8 inches in the long jump at regionals. In the relay events, Willis helped her 4x100 relay team to a 4A State Championship time of 46.61 and 1:37.73 in the 4x200 meter relay. During the 2010 indoor season, Willis clocked a best time of 57.86 in the 400 meters.
ALISA PERKINS: Perkins is a sprinter from Skyline High School in Dallas, Texas. During the 2010 season, she clocked just 11.98 seconds in the 100-meter dash at the state meet. She helped Skylines 4x200 meter relay team to a time of 1:37.67 at state as well. In 2008, Perkins earned her best time in the 200 meters with 24.98 seconds.
ZOE MEADE: Meade is a standout multi-event athlete from Onate High School in Las Cruces, N.M. She was the 2009 state champion in the high jump while at Las Cruces High School. She qualified for six events at the 2010 state track and field meet. Meade and the 4x200 meter relay team placed first at the 2010 state championships in 1:43.24 and helped the 4x100 meter relay team to a fourth-place finish. Individually she was second in the 200 meters and fourth in the high jump.
BELLOSIE FRAZIER: Frazier focuses on throwing events at Vincennes University in Indiana, is a national champion in the 20lbs weight throw with a launch of 52-05 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Indoor Championships. She marked her best throw in the hammer throw with 155-06 and 44-07 is the personal best shot put at the Anderson Fred Wilt Memorial Indoor Invitational in 2009.
KAYLAH BURTON: The senior from Pflugerville High School in Pflugerville, Texas, is a multi-event athlete and holds a best time of 11.9 seconds in the 100 meters and 24.9 in the 200 meters. Burton also set a personal-best mark in the long jump with 18-09 and 37-06 in the triple jump while at PHS. During her senior season, Burton marked a best 100-meter time of 12.1 seconds and 25.1 seconds in the 200 meters.
SAMANTHA HAMILTON: Coming to NM State from Half Moon High School in half Moon, Calif., Hamilton will join the Aggie distance runners. She has a best 800-meter time of 2:25.22 and clocked 5:16.03 in the 1,600 meters. The senior paced her best 3,200-meter run with 11:09.99. On the cross country trail, Hamilton earned her best time of the 2009 season with 19:01.
KAYLA NAGUNST: the Rainer High School graduate from Columbians, Ore., was a state champion in the 400 meters with a time of 58.53 in 2009 and was also first in the state in the 800 meters as she clocked 2:17.97. She also placed second in the state cross country meet in 2009 as well.
BRYAN SIMISON: Simison comes to NM State from Eisenhower High School in Yakima, WA. Simison finished sixth place at the 2010 Washington State Track Championships, 14th at the 2009 Washington State Cross Country Championships, and 21st at the 2009 Nike Border Clash. Simison has a 3200m PR of 9:12.
