LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State women’s basketball head coach Mark Trakh announced on Friday the signing of guard Zaire Williams to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Aggies beginning next season.
Williams, a 5-6 guard from Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., played her high school ball for the Santa Margarita Catholic High School Eagles where she averaged 11 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals per game.
“Zaire is an athletic point guard who is also very skilled,” Trakh said. “With hard work on the floor and weight room, Zaire could be an excellent player. We are looking forward to coaching her”
As the only senior on her team this past season, Williams led Santa Margarita to a 23-4 record and its first California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section (CIF-SS) title since 2010 as the Eagles won the Division 3A championship. Williams scored a game-high 18 points during the championship game a week after scoring a game-high 24 points in the semifinal match. The team came within one game of playing for the CIF-SS Division-3 state title.
For her efforts, Williams was named the team MVP, the CIF-SS Player of the Year and was placed on the All-Orange County Girls Basketball Team by OC Sidelines.
