Aggies Finish UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas—The New Mexico State track and field team finished competition at the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, April 19.

The day was highlighted by junior Diana Hawk and senior Gael Sanchez who both took home the individual victory in their respective races.

“Diana (Hawk) did a nice job today,” head coach Orin Richburg said. “Gael (Sanchez) also had a good day for us. Now, we have to go back and see what we can do in the next couple of weeks to get us where we need to be as a team before the conference championship.”

Hawk represented the Aggies in the 3000-meter run, where she took first place with a time of 9:49.03. Hawk had previously won four consecutive races at 1500-meters heading into this weekend.

Sanchez was the only Aggie to compete in the 3000-meter steeplechase where she earned a first-place finish with a time of 11:26.68.

Senior Alishia Perkins competed in the 100-and-200-meter dash where she led the Aggies in both races. In the 100-meter dash, Perkins finished fourth overall with a time of 12.05. In the 200-meter dash, she finished third with a time of 24.68.

In the 400-meter dash, freshman Paige Patterson and senior Brianna Cromartie earned top-10 finishes. Patterson led the way for the Aggies with an eighth-place finish with a time of 57.56. Cromartie finished ninth with a time of 57.86.

Sophomore Latrice Brooks led the Aggies with a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.91.

In the discus throw, freshman Akuadasou Ezenyilimba led the Aggies and finished fifth with a throw of 38.30m (125’8”). She also led NM State with a seventh-place finish in the hammer throw with a distance of 44.04m (144’6”).

Junior Tiffany Gerber earned a second-place finish in the javelin throw with a distance of 40.70m (133’6”). Fellow junior Nicolette Serrao finished sixth with a distance of 36.67m (120’3”).

The Aggies will continue their travels to Texas as they will compete at the Rice Owls Invitational in Houston, Texas on April 26.
