WACO, Texas – The New Mexico State Equestrian team ended its 2013-14 season Thursday afternoon with a 10-6 loss to SMU at the 2014 NCEA National Championships. Both the Hunter Seat and Western teams scored three points each in the round one match up.

“We came into the championships after a great regular season and we felt really good about our chances this week to compete for a national championship,” head coach Robin Morris-Walters said. “I thought everyone rode very strong and fought to the end. I couldn’t be more proud of your team and the season we had. We lose some key seniors this season but we have a lot of returners for next year, which I feel gives us a great chance to have another strong season.”

The Hunter Seat team fell 5-3, tying in Equitation over Fences, 2-2 and dropping 3-1 in Equitation on the Flat. Two of the Aggies’ five loses in Hunter Seat were by eight points or less.

Shannon Dooley earned the lone point for the Aggies in the Flat competition with a 147-182 win over Emma Roberts of SMU. In Fences, Emily McConnell defeated SMU’s Schafer Raposa, 165-133, as Elizabeth Solomon beat Sylvia de Toledo of SMU, 155-146.

The Western team scores looked much the same, falling 5-2 as well. The Horsemanship team tied 2-2, while the Reining team lost 3-1.

Brynn Larson earned the only point for NM State in Reining with a 140-136 win over Morgan Redwine of SMU. In total, the Aggies lost three head-to-head match-ups in Reining by two and a half points. Courtney Cruse beat Redwine in the Horsemanship competition by a score of 145-136.5, as Rianna Story defeated Jaclyn White, 139.5-120.

The Aggies end their season at 9-6 overall, holding a 4-1 record at home in 2013-14.
