LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men’s tennis team picked up its third Western Athletic Conference win of the season with a 4-3 defeat over Grand Canyon on Saturday, April 12. Despite the high winds in Las Cruces, NM State was able to battle to the win and improve to a 10-10 record overall and 3-0 in conference play.

The Aggies grabbed the doubles point with an 8-1 win at the No. 1 spot by senior Mark Westgate and Naveen Manivannan. The next Aggie win was from redshirt sophomore Paul Denele and junior Patrick Pfister, who teamed up for an 8-5 win at the second court. The third court was left unfinished as the Aggies had already claimed the point.

“Denele clinched his singles match after being down a break,” head coach Carlos Vargas said. “We beat a very good GCU team and it is nice to finish the year undefeated in regular season WAC play. We are looking forward to continuing our success into the conference tournament.”

NM State picked up three singles wins on the day, the first coming from sophomore Strahinja Trecakov with a three-set win at the third second court. Denele came up in the third spot for a hard-fought win 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. NM State fell at the fourth spot, but came up with a two-set win (6-4, 6-2) by Patrick Pfister. While falling at the fourth and sixth courts, the Aggies took those matches to three sets, battling with each swing.

NM State finishes the regular season on Sunday, April 13 against UT-Permian Basin. The match is set for 11 a.m. with the senior presentation to take place between doubles and singles.
