LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State head soccer coach Freddy Delgado announced the addition of Niki Brooks as his assistant coach for the 2014 season. Brooks has eight years of coaching experience, including a year as an assistant for a team in the Western Athletic Conference.

“We are very excited to have Niki join our Aggie soccer family,” head coach Freddy Delgado said. “We had a strong, deep pool of candidates and it was a difficult decision.  But it was Niki’s experience, ability to train goalkeepers and enthusiastic demeanor that set her apart from a competitive group.”

Brooks spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach for San Jose State University where she was responsible for the daily technical and tactical goalkeeper training. Before San Jose State, Brooks served as assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay from 2011-13. She coached one of Green Bay’s goalkeepers to become the all-time career in saves as well as earn Player of the Week honors. Throughout her career, Brooks has primarily focused on goalkeeper training. She was also head coach for the FC Green Bay soccer club, assistant coach of the Wisconsin and Oregon Olympic Development Program, among others.

Brooks joins the Aggies with knowledge of the WAC as she was an assistant at Idaho during the 2010 season and helped the Vandals make their first WAC Tournament appearance, which led to the best finish in school history.

At the collegiate level, Brooks also spent time with Portland State, Linfield College and Pacific University, assisting with each school’s soccer programs.

Brooks played internationally for the FC Braatz Soccer Club as a goalie in 2004 and 2006. She helped her team win the Regio Haarlem Cup Champion in 2004 in Haarlem, Netherlands and come back to win the Donosti Cup Tournament Champion in San Sebastian, Spain in 2006.

Brooks played as a goalie from 2002-05 at Portland State. She broke school records in career saves and shutouts and tied single-season shutouts. Brooks also received Big Sky All-Conference Honorable Mention, Big Sky Conference Player of the Week and helped the Vikings to a 2004 league title.

“We have tremendous talent in goal and I believe Niki can get the most out of our goalkeepers.  She has achieved success as a player and a coach and also brings with her the personality and attitude we need to balance out the staff.  I’m looking forward to working with Niki to help get Aggie Soccer to the next level,” Delgado said.

Brooks graduated from Portland State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical activity and exercise with a minor in sociology. She went on to receive her masters from PSU in secondary education.
