LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men’s tennis team plays two matches in Arlington, Texas, this weekend to kick off a five-match road trip.  The Aggies will face UT-San Antonio on Saturday, March 8, and UT-Arlington on Sunday, March 9, at the UTA Tennis Center.  Both matches are scheduled for a 9 a.m. (MT) start.

NM State heads to Texas with a 7-4 overall record, including 3-0 on neutral sites, which will be the case with the match versus UTSA, and 0-1 at an opponent’s home court.

The Aggies are coming of a home split during their most recent matches, defeating Abilene Christian, 6-1, on Saturday, Feb. 22, before losing to Arizona, 4-2, on Sunday, Feb. 23.  The loss to the Wildcats broke a three-match winning streak for NM State and concluded a five-match homestand in which the Aggies went 3-2.

NM State junior Patrick Pfister will head into Saturday’s matchup a winner of seven-straight singles matches, a season high for the Aggies.  Sophomore Strahinja Trecakov, meanwhile, finished February with a 5-2 record in both singles and doubles play, mostly playing at the No. 1 spot for NM State in singles.  He was named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 10-16.

The UTSA Roadrunners sit at 4-9 on the spring season, including 1-2 while playing on a neutral court.  The Roadrunners are coming off a 4-3 victory over DePaul on Saturday, March 1, that snapped a six-match losing streak.  UTSA will face home-team UTA on Friday before facing the Aggies on Saturday.

The UTA Mavericks are 3-6 this season with all their victories coming on their home court (3-2).  The Mavericks last played on Sunday and Monday, Feb. 23-24, losing to Texas, 6-1, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 4-3.  UTA has two matches before facing NM State on Sunday, meeting Nicholls State on Thursday before its matchup with UTSA on Friday.

The Aggies last met the Roadrunners on March 24, 2012, in San Antonio, losing to UTSA 4-3.  This will be the fourth-consecutive year NM State and the Mavericks meet on the tennis court.  Last season the Aggies defeated UTA, 4-2, on March 3 at the NM State Tennis Center.
